This week, we’re talking hip hop. As usual, this conversation is between a hip hop (old) head and a (let’s say) casual fan, but this was sparked by a Netflix docu-series called “Hip Hop Evolution”. This isn’t a review of the series, but a lot of what the series touched on (and didn’t) made us feel it was necessary to address concerns about the trajectory the culture is currently on and also, who should be charged with telling hip hop’s history. From our perspective, this docu-series highlighted what we think we already knew: Hip Hop isn’t getting better and we’ll be lucky if it simply stays at the level it is now and doesn’t get worse…So, yes, there will be a bunch of bitching and moaning about the current state of hip hop, but we tried to give some reasoning behind it.
