This week, we’re dedicating an episode to a listener question. @rainbowblak asked (paraphrasing): “Do we as black parents set up our children for failure?” We wanted to approach answering the question with as much thought as we could, but also, (as always) honestly and in a somewhat thorough manner. So,¬†we answered the question from a few different angles: Has society created a system that sets black and brown children up for failure? Are we as parents, in fact, the ones who are setting our children up by reinforcing unrealistic goals? Finally, we spent some time talking about how spanking a child factors in to all of this. Should you spank? Can that cause any lasting effects that could be construed as “setting your child up for failure”?
